Shopping locally in Flemington

The footpath extension has finally been completed in Pin Oak Crescent.

Please support our local retailers especially in Pin Oak Crescent!

Buy some flowers, a new dress, go out for lunch or service your bike.

When the landscaping and added extras are all completed, the area will be an even better place to shop locally. We have wonderful neighbourhood shops in Pin Oak Crescent and Racecourse Rd – please support local enterprise.

To celebrate the completion of these works there will be an open day for shoppers and local residents. There will be free activities and entertainment on the day including:• Balloons for the kids• A roving entertainer• Face painting • Surprise giveaways

Debneys Park

The concept plan for Debneys Park improvements are available at: or at the library or at the Council Civic Centre.

If you are interested in having a look and making comments, please do so soon. Your input will be accepted after the advertised cut-off – but hurry!

I am continuing to work with some other Councillors to prevent more of Debneys Park being lost to road space. Further information about options will be made available to Council within the coming month.

Community Grants

The Community grants process will be open from August 3rd to August 31st.

Community groups large and small are encouraged to apply for grants to assist with projects, admin, partnerships etc.

Please visit or contact Moonee Valley Council on 9243 8888 for more information.

Farnham St Reserve

Stage One of the works are finally underway.

Stage Two will be commenced in August/September if all goes to plan.

We are working on further opportunities for community input – planting and working bee days.
Watch out for signs on site with dates for involvement.

It has been a busy month! Here is an update on South Ward matters.

1 Ascot Vale Rd

The PDP has reported back to Council (see ). The Planning Minister offered a facilitated design workshop, but it was felt by Council that this was premature. Council is seeking a response from the applicant as to whether they wish to proceed with advertising the current plans in light of the PDP advice.

Hard copies of the PDP report are available at the Flemington Library (313 Racecourse Rd, Flemington) and at the Planning Counter at Moonee Valley Council’s Civic Centre (9 Kellaway Ave, Moonee Ponds).Council will hold two public information sessions to update the community on the PDP Report and the MGS Architects Report, as well as the next steps in the application process.
Session one: Monday, 20 July12.30pm-1.30pm
Session two: Monday, 20 July7.00pm-8.30pm
Both sessions will be held at the Moonee Valley Civic Centre, 9 Kellaway Ave, Moonee Ponds.

Debneys Park

Regarding the proposed sale of an additional portion of Debneys Park, the majority of Council voted in favour of this with me and Cr Cusack strongly opposing this proposal. The Mayor is working with South Ward Councillors to try to develop new plans that do not require any sale of parkland. I will keep you posted.

Improvements at Debneys Park

Council with support from the Heart Foundation and with input from a special group of local primary school students and Flemington residents, has developed a draft plan to improve and activate Debneys Park in Flemington.

Overall improvements outlined in the draft plan include:
Introducing new active play spaces for children of all ages while retaining the basketball court
New seating and furniture
Improved pathways for pedestrians and cyclists
Viewing platforms over the creek
Improvements to biodiversity through new plantings including retention of all existing trees
Increased shade and habitat
Improved entry points to the park
Improvements to the community garden including new fencing, entry point and possible market place

The draft Concept Plan is on consultation for two weeks from 8 July to 22 July.
Copies of the draft Concept Plan will be on display in Debneys Park, Council’s Civic Centre, at the Flemington Community Centre, at the Flemington Library and at

All residents are encouraged to view this plan and to send their comments to:Email: 9243 8888Post: PO Box 126, Moonee Ponds 3039

Pin Oak Crescent

The works in Pin Oak Crescent are to widen the footpath to allow for seating for cafes, bike racks and other beautification. The works have disrupted business for the traders and I thank them for their patience. Please help boost the area and make it a great shopping strip by supporting the shops in this area – it is a tough climate for traders and local shops need your support.

Residents have now received a survey so you can let us know what sort of street sweeping program you would like for Flemington Hill. Please provide any feedback you think is relevant. I am absolutely committed to getting this right and finding a solution that does not cause concern or frustration for residents. Please work with Councillors to help us get this right! Call with any queries.

Racecourse and Union Rd Structure Plans

There have been some concerns expressed about the current set of plans for Racecourse Rd Structure Plan. There is another meeting coming up in August – time and date to follow. Please let me know if you would like more information. We need to get the Structure Plan right.

Community Planning

I am hoping to hold a community planning session in August at Flemington Community Centre. It will be a workshop to hear from community members about our vision for the area. If you are interested in attending, let me know and I will try and find a time that suits those interested.

Parking and traffic surveys

Are taking place in Ascot Vale and Moonee Ponds. Thanks for your patience, cooperation and feedback. When the survey results come to Council for a decision, I will hope that Council supports the views put forward by South ward residents.

Greenhouse and Climate change

We are still waiting of the Greenhouse Action Plan to come to Council, but I believe it is not far away. It is an important plan for establishing actions to meet our ambitious targets. Look out for it and make comments.

Cycling and Walking

The committee meets Monday 13th July and I chair this Council group. Please let me know of any cycling and walking issues that require attention.
